What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural and altered state of consciousness characterized by a deep relaxation, a heightened awareness and increased responsiveness. We all experience hypnosis many times each day whether we realize it or not. It is that blissful state when we drift off to sleep at night and when we wake up in the morning. Daydreaming, driving on “autopilot” when traveling long distances (referred to as highway hypnosis), or being completely absorbed in a good book or movie, are also examples of common, ordinary hypnotic states.
What is Hypnotherapy?
More than 80% of what we do each day comes from the subconscious mind. There are things that we think and do automatically without really giving it a conscious thought. Some of these thoughts and actions are positive while others are negative. In a therapeutic setting, a trained hypnotherapist uses relaxation and visualization techniques to help the client achieve a calm, relaxed, state of trance. When this occurs, the conscious mind relaxes, allowing the subconscious mind to surface. Through guided imagery and positive suggestions, the hypnotherapist can help the client to achieve the changes they seek. We can eliminate or change negative bodily reactions by changing the thought or idea responsible for the reaction, which tends to produce positive thoughts and actions.
In session, the hypnotherapist can assist clients to gain insight; find new solutions; restructure old, limiting beliefs; intensify positive feelings; eliminate negative feelings; develop new, healthy habits; and much more.
